New ‘super’ National Nature Reserves created to protect rare wildlife.
Our interest in creating a green space within Eastertown for the benefit of the residents on Lympsham, has coincided with the recent announcement in May 2022, of a new National Nature reserve spanning large parts of Somerset and encompassing some of the country’s most precious habitats. It amounts to 6,140 hectares of saltmarsh, heath and wetland habitats.
Hard on the heels of that announcement came the news in October 2023 that a similar reserve of 31 sites across the Mendip Hills, covering 400 hectares of land, were also being conserved.
We and several other smaller initiatives in villages on and around the Mendip Hills and the Moors are beginning to join in, by creating smaller areas of green space. Current we have begun to talk to groups operating in Wedmore, Wookey, Hutton and Congresbury and Yatton.
Whilst individual small areas of green spaces, do not join up to form wildlife corridors, they do provide stopping off places for more mobile species and protection for local species, if they are given favourable conditions. Our naturalists in the steering group are planning to survey the area of the future Eastertown Common and monitor the changes over time.
